Our READINESS PROGRAM trains the child’s perception through the use of sets that invite him to classify by size, shape, color, or pattern. The child is not ready to read until a fixed habit of moving from left to right has been established. A practical understanding of number values comes before written math. How many crackers do we need for each boy and girl? How many blocks can we stack to make a tower? We gain recognition of letters and numbers through daily experiences. We stress rhyming, sequencing, and developing eye-hand coordination through games, toys, craft activities, music, and stories. The Pre-K children’s program is Kindergarten readiness with emphasis placed on fine motor development, alphabet recognition, introduction to beginning letter sounds, number writing and recognition, and name writing.
MOTOR SKILLS are of primary importance. We develop gross motor control through block-building and the use of playground equipment, as well as the group activities of KINDERGYM, in which the children learn to throw, catch, balance, hop, skip, and jump while playing games and using colorful equipment. Fine motor control is developed through use of puzzles, scissors, crayons, play dough, and the stringing of beads.
THE MUSIC PROGRAM is an important part of our schedule, contributing to physical development through rhythms and the use of instruments. Listening skills and vocabulary development are sharpened through the singing of many fun songs.
LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT is further promoted through “Show and Tell,” stories, verses, and the teacher’s use of names for objects in the room, body parts and vocabulary relating to our weekly study units.
In CHAPEL, the children are taught moral values with an emphasis on good manners. They are also told basic Bible stories, through puppetry and storytelling, as well as Bible songs.
SOCIAL GROWTH is fostered through group planning, cooperative endeavors, and the responsibility for classroom jobs which provide each child a turn to be leader, door holder, snack passer, clean-up helper, etc. Sharing is stressed as well as being a good listener and learning to taking care of our things.
CREATIVITY is natural to an uninhibited preschooler. Our program gives daily opportunities to select attractive materials and use them creatively to make the child’s own works of art. The use of crayons, magic markers, scissors, glue, colored paper, and play dough as well as a variety of possibilities for painting with brushes, blowers, gadgets, sponges, potatoes or fruit, etc., provide not only an outlet for the creative impulses, but also promotes the fine motor coordination that is necessary before one starts to write. Artwork is displayed in the classrooms and hallways.
STUDY UNITS Throughout the preschool year, our cognitive experiences are organized and strengthened by activities related to a “study unit” that is the central theme for a week or more. Stories, music, crafts, projects, field trips, and study units revolve around the holidays and such things as “Community Helpers,” “Communication,” “Transportation,” “Weather,” “Animals,” “Birds and Insects,” “Families and Friends,” “Seasons”, and “Travel.” Parents are informed of each study unit through the monthly class calendar.
